Myth: Eggshells Sharpen the Blades

Reality: Garbage disposals don't have blades—they have impellers that spin to force food against a grind ring. Eggshells' stringy membrane can wrap around these components and create clogs over time.

Myth: Ice Cubes Clean the Disposal

Reality: While ice can knock off some debris, it doesn't actually clean anything. Running cold water and dish soap is more effective.

Myth: You Need Hot Water When Running It

Reality: Cold water is better. Hot water can melt fats and grease, which then re-solidify in your drain pipes. Cold water keeps grease solid so it gets chopped up instead.

Myth: Lemons Keep It Fresh

Reality: Partially true! Citrus peels can help with odor and their oils do have some cleaning properties. Just use small pieces and don't overdo it—the acid can corrode rubber components over time.

  • Fruit pits and seeds - Too hard, can damage components
  • Non-food items - Twist ties, rubber bands, glass (obviously, but it happens)

What's Safe to Dispose

Your garbage disposal can easily handle:

  • Soft food scraps
  • Small pieces of cooked meat (no bones)
  • Fruit without pits
  • Most vegetables (cut into small pieces first)
  • Bread and cereal

Best Practices for Long Life

Run cold water before, during, and after

Start the water 15 seconds before turning on the disposal and let it run 15 seconds after grinding stops. This flushes everything through.

Use it regularly

Disposals that sit unused can corrode and jam. Run it every few days even if you don't have much to grind.

Keep it clean

Once a week, put a few drops of dish soap down the drain while running cold water and the disposal. Monthly, you can use a disposal cleaning pod or make ice cubes from vinegar for a deeper clean.

Don't overload it

Feed waste in gradually. Cramming too much at once overwhelms the motor and can cause jams.

Signs Your Disposal Needs Attention

  • Humming but not spinning - Likely jammed (often fixable with the hex key underneath)
  • Won't turn on at all - Check the reset button first, then the circuit breaker
  • Persistent bad odors - May indicate trapped food or the need for deep cleaning
  • Leaking from bottom - Usually means internal seals are shot—time for replacement
  • Draining slowly - Partial clog forming; address it before it gets worse
